Sad Snakeskin: China Glaze Oxygen and Golden Spurs
This has to be one of saddest (and disappointing) manis ever! I almost didn’t post it. In my mind, it was going to be cool and funky, but it really just turned out to be something I could wear to a job interview! I started with two coats of China Glaze Oxygen (a years old untried recommended by 74 Days of Polish). Then I stamped the snakeskin using China Glaze Golden Spurs (another untried) and BM 215.
I made the whole hot mess worse by finishing with a matte topcoat (OPI by Sephora). I’m not sure what I was thinking. It just made this barely there nail art even more blah. I guess this look would be a good “baby step” for someone who was a afraid of getting too wild! Actually, I think it looks like my nails are dirty…or diseased. LOL. In any event, I’m going to categorize this one as a “Work Mani”!
I should note that I really did like China Glaze Oxygen. It’s a slightly pink sheer creamy white that would be a great clean mani on it’s own…with a shiny topcoat!
So help me feel better…what manis were masterpieces in your minds but turned out to be a total disappointments?

Hmmm…so many times I’ve tried to do your designs and my version just ended up a hot mess!! LOL Let’s see, there was the gradient “sunset” mani (in my mind) that looked a lot more like candy corn exploded on my nails. And recently I tried a simple half moon that actually almost looked like I marbled them. But not in a cute way. Ha ha! You definitely get respect from me because your manis are always so pretty!! I’m just going to admire them, instead of attempt them. ;-)
I’m laughing out loud at the candy corn! Believe me…I’ve done my share of some hideous gradients. The first color is great, the second color is fine…they even look good together. But then the overlap area looks like gray fudge. Not a good look.
Water marble manicures! Every time I try to conquer it it turns out a hot, hot mess. I have to admit that I like your ‘Sad Snakeskin’ a lot.
I have not tried water marble specifically because I can’t handle the failure after working so hard and using so much polish! :) I’d rather fail quickly and with minimal investment. :)
I second that – I tried water marbling twice. I can do it, it just never seems to look as great on me for some reason. *shrugs*
It’s subtle, but I like it!
Thanks! :)
I like your mani, once I tried to do a chevron stripes styled. I am just gonna say that I ended up with polish and tape all over my hands it was a mess!! Since then I am not allowed to use tape with polish.
That’s funny. Step away from the tape! I think my husband wants to ban gradients because I make a total mess and then he has to hear me complain about how much I hate it. LOL
Trying to create ruffian manicures that don’t look like my nails just grew out! Or….the worst is when I thought the red base color and nude top color would look nice. It turned out to look like my cuticles were all bleeding. Needless to say, I promptly removed the polish!

Okay. People are wondering why I’m laughing out loud at my desk at work! The thought of a bleeding cuticle ruffian is absolutely hilarious! There’s gotta be a target market for that look somewhere.
I painted everything so perfectly and was just appalled at what I just did to my own nails.
Definitely looked like I had a drug problem or something. Maybe the ‘bleeding cuticle ruffian’ will be popular for halloween or horror movies?

LOL! This really did make me laugh!
I think it’s awesome because it looks like the skin of the coral snow-coloured corn snake ;)
and thanks for following my humble blog. xoxo
I just googled that snake! I should rename this post “coral snow corn snake” and pretend I meant to do it all along! Thanks for reading.
you absolutely should do that ;)
they are amazingly beautiful animals.
have a great sunday!
I recently tried to re-create a fire opal look, but it was disastrous because I used a shimmery blue-leaning teal as the base coat. The shimmer trumped the flaky coat I used, and it was just one hot mess. Bleh.
It actually sounds really pretty! I bet it was beautiful…just not what you expected.
I think the shimmer by itself was fine and that the flaky would have been pretty over a flat color, but the combination of the two was really gaudy. Just not my style…
I really like this look though! I just spent like two days doing stamping – trying to hit “pay dirt” and literally ended up walking away twice because I got so frustrated. At least your stamping came out nice! Mine was hideeous!
I think this is lovely! I’m sorry it didn’t turn out how you wanted, but I really do like it. I’m not even into work/subtle manis and I think it’s great. I WISH my fails were this lovely :).
oh, definitely! I did the snakeskin once and I didn’t really dig it but posted it anyway. lol. and of course, there are many unmentionables. But i love your work, Leslie! And your nails are lovely. :)
I actually really like it!!;-)
I thought of an albino snake as soon as I saw this mani and LOVED it! Although I can sort of see what you mean by your nails looking diseased. Maybe you could wear this one to a reptile show sometime. :)

I post manis that I deem to be failures all the time. They’re almost always more magnificent in my head. The nice thing is that, even if you aren’t all the impressed with it, some of your readers will probably love it.
