Tone-on-Tone: Essie Leading Lady Red-Tipped French
Good morning! Today I have a tone-on-tone french mani. In the spirit of the holidays…I’ve used red on red. Specifically Essie Leading Lady tips over A-England Perceval. The look is really subtle, but very pretty. Especially when you move your hand around in the light.
I started with two coats of Perceval. This is an awesome red! (You can read my review of it here.) After a coat of Seche Vite and 15 minutes, I taped off the tips using Sally Hansen French manicure guides. I polished one generous coat of Leading Lady and finished with another coat of Seche Vite. Sorry to picture bomb you but is was difficult to narrow it down!
Have any of you tried a tone-on-tone french before?

pretty and elegant too…
Thanks, Mel!
I am in love! The Perceval looks like the perfect foiled red!!
Perceval is seriously the most fabulous red I’ve ever tried!
Aaaaannnnd…just placed an order for Perceval and 4 others. Your swatches totally pushed me into “absolutely must have” territory!!
I haven’t tried a tone-on-tone French yet but plan to for a Hannukah party this weekend!
What color will you use? I like the matte/shiny french too! Thanks for reading!
Well, I messed up. lol I forgot the polish I wanted to use–Orly’s Torrid–has more shimmer than you see in the bottle, so when I did the tips in China Glaze’s Ruby Pumps, you have to look pretty close to see any difference. Still, I’m hoping the glitter on the tips will keep it looking fresher longer since most of my glittery polishes don’t chip much at all.
I saw my nails out in the sun and there, you can tell that there are two different colors so I guess I didn’t do so badly after all!
Gorgeous combo. I know it’s hard to photograph looks like this, they always look better in person. You did great though, now I want to do a monochrome look :)
Thank you! Means a lot coming from you! :)
Does Leading Lady compare to China Glaze Ruby Red Pumps?
Good question, Emily. I haven’t done a side by side comparison. I’ll put it on my list! :)
Brilliant! I am copy catting you and painting my nails like this for my holiday party this weekend. Thanks for the idea oh Mani Master!
Just don’t get arrested wearing my mani! LOL :D
I’m call you to bail me out.
I really ain’t a christmas person and so on but this color combination is so brilliant! Good work (:
Thanks! I’d like to try it in blue…or orange. I wonder what’s a good, sparkly orange glitter polish?
Oh, I’ll for sure be back to take look those combos too (: Hm, the best I found this long is Depend nr 307 but theres just a little bit of spark and non glitter, nice orande polishes are hard to find :/
Love it!
Thanks, Danisha!
This is so gorgeous!! :D
Sorry Ashesela. I’m getting behind in responding to comments! Thank you!!
I wonder … would it too much for a very casual, Non-White!, wedding? I’m wearing black long gown with rhinestone time across a no-sleeve low neckline dress. He’s wearing black suit, black shirt, black and red tie. We like black! lol
I say go for it! I went to a wedding once where the bridesmaids wore black and the bride had a custom wedding gown…beading, veil, huge train…just a gorgeous wedding gown – but it was completed RED! We all gasped when she walked out because it had been kept such a secret.
I love this look! Very subtle, but very festive!
Thanks, Robin! :)
Oooh, perfect for Christmas!
It is a nice Christmas mani. I contemplate green tips at first and thought that would look too “blood and gangrene” -ish. LOL.
I reallllly love this!! Beautiful, simple, & festive!
Thanks Maribeth! Thanks for reading.
