Digit-al Dozen Does Geek: Harry Potter Houses of Hogwarts

I have a confession to make. I have never read a word nor watched a second of anything Harry Potter. Nada. It’s like Greek to me. But my daughter insisted I do a Harry Potter mani for Geek Week. So I put her in charge. She curated the colors from my stash, gave me instructions and I went to work…no questions asked. The result? A Harry Potter mani in the colors of the four Houses of Hogwarts.
I painted the lighter color first and taped off the stripes with striping tape. Then followed with the darker color and immediately removed the tape for crisp lines. The Deathly Hallows symbol on the thumb was done with striping tape and a little freehand in Essie Licorice and Zoya Purity.
Here are the polishes I used:
- Gryffindor: (middle finger) Pure Ice Red Hot Mama & Finger Paints Figure of Art
- Ravenclaw: (ring finger) China Glaze First Mate & Pure Ice Silver Mercedes
- Hufflepuff: (pinky) OPI The “It” Color & Essie Licorice
- Slytherin: (pointer finger) Pure Ice Femme Fatale & Pure Ice Silver Mercedes
Sorry to say, I’m still not a Harry Potter convert…but I do like this mani!
Don’t forget to check out the rest of the geekiness from the Digit-al Dozen!

Oh wow! You might not be Harry savvy; but from a Potter fanatic, let me tell you, your design is GORGEOUS! The colours are absolutely perfect – you and your daughter have done beautifully! Can’t wait to try this one myself :)
Thanks, Meg. My daughter was sooo proud of these. :)
My geek is showing… Ravenclaw’s accent color is actually bronze! That said, I LOVE THIS AND I’M TOTALLY GONNA COPY IT.
I was gonna say the exact same thing about Ravenclaw! Silly movies, arbitrarily changing things. I never realized CG First Mate made such a good Ravenclaw blue though, good to know. This mani looks so pretty and clean, I really wanna do one now…
Thanks Sara and Heather! We actually went back and forth about the Ravenclaw accent color and decided to go with the tie colors in the uniforms. I love that everyone is showing their “geek” LOL.
I think they use bronze in the book, but silver in the movies. Clearly my geek is showing, too. ;)
Eeee! I was all excited until I read that you’re not a HP fan and then I was sad. :P But I love this mani! It’s so pretty!
Jen, maybe if I just gave it a try I would be a convert. It’s such a time investment! I feel like I’m too far behind. LOL.
Well, it’s well worth your time investment! ;) I got my boyfriend to start reading the first book, we’ll see how that goes.
I’m a full HP nerd and I love this!!
I learn something new about you, Susan, every day!
So cool, the stripes looks perfect!
Thanks, Heather. The stripes did turn out well. It’s counterintuitive, but the thicker and wetter the coat of polish over the striping tape – the better they turn out.
These are so perfect! Wow!
Thanks, Kirsten!
Amazing mani!! I’ve been wanting to do a HP mani for a while, but I don’t have the right colors, so this is really helpful :D Your daughter chose the perfect shades!
She loves reading these comments. She was very careful with her choices. She did say it was “sad” that I had so much polish for her to choose from. LOL.
If you ever develop a curiosity about Harry Potter, I recommend the audio books read by Jim Dale. He’s amazing. And nobody is ever too old to be read to sleep.
Nice tip, Rose. I am indeed curious about anything that can keep my 12 year olds attention for hours at a time. I have a long commute to work so that might be something to consider.
Seconding those audio books! His voice is absolutely perfect to narrate the Harry Potter books.
i dont know anything about the books or movies either and yet, as soon as i saw this in my feed, i knew what it was – well done!
That’s a great compliment!!
Your daughter did a great job! I love HP and these nails. Man, Geek Week is proving just how much of a geek I am, hahaha!
Hi Shelby…yes, our geek is definitely showing this week.
