Digit-al Dozen Does Geek: The Original Star Trek U.S.S Enterprise Crew Uniforms

It’s Day 4 of Digit-al Dozen Geek Week. As I warned you…I have another predictable “geek” mani. Today’s look was inspired by the uniforms of the original U.S.S. Enterprise crew. My pictures do little to demonstrate the effort I expended to create this masterpiece. That Shatner olive-green-gray-yellow? Custom blend, folks.

Original Star Trek Inspired Mani

The uniform collars made me think of a half moon mani so I ran with it. I have LOTS of polish. LOTS. I even have polishes that are almost the perfect 1966 shades depicted here. But they’re not all creams and I couldn’t have Captain Kirk wearing a shimmery spandex shirt. Speaking of Kirk, he’s not quite as buff in the midsection as I remember. But I digress. [image source]

The “collars” are Essie Licorice and the Star Trek logo is Gold acrylic paint. Here are the polishes I used for the shirts. I sort of made it up as I went along:

  • Kirk Yellow: OPI The “It” Color, Pure Ice The Secret is Out & a smidge of Zoya Kelly
  • Spock Blue: China Glaze First Mate and Zoya Purity
  • Ohura Red: one coat of Zoya America and one coat of Zoya Kristi

Don’t ask me why I remember this exactly…but I have a distinct memory of being four years old and coming home from church on a Sunday and eating Kentucky Fried Chicken while watching my first Star Trek rerun. It must have made quite the impression on me!

Check out the other Digit-al Dozen Geeky Manis!

  1. Ahh I did something similar last year before attending the Star Trek convention in London (I’m so cool) but I did the three uniforms and glitter on thumb and pinkie to looks like space (before I was aware of the galaxy crazy – missed oppourtunity!)
These are the geeky designs I’ve tried so far – most of them from a while ago so ignore the mess and poor quality photos and polish lol

    • Helen, I love your geek nails! Nightmare before Christmas is a great idea!! I usually have all 5 themed manis done in advance, but I’ve only done the 4. Which means tonight I have to come up with one more idea! Anybody have any thoughts?

      • w/p/p — are you familiar with the geekfest that is the strategy collectible card game Magic The Gathering? There are five mana colors in the game: white, blue, black, red, and green. No more, no less. Five colors — five fingers. Coincidence? I don’t think so!! :-D

      • Thanks :) I love having geek nails, it’s like my two favourite things! And the Nightmare Before Christmas ones were just so simple. Love yours though, they are so good!

Love these! Very geek…but I have to admit (I am tons older than most nail blog commenters)…I was watching the original ST each week in college when first broadcast – and we knew it was campy then! You really captured the feel of their jackets perf…I would recognize them with no descriptions!

    • No worries, beachgal…I’m older too…while I didn’t watch the original Star Trek in college…I probably didn’t watch the first reruns when other commenters did either. LOL.

  9. OMG…. I am a huge Trekker. Original series was my favorite – Your mani is so perfectly simple yet evocative – a most logical design choice!

  10. Pardon my French but you are so f’n fab! A custom blend polish just in honor of Shatner? Oh, snap!

  11. She canna take anymore captain……they are perfect! :)

  12. I grew up watching reruns with my Dad. I have seen every original episode. I’m totally in awe of this manicure. It’s amazing. I really love it, and might have to give myself this manicure the next time I see my Dad. Thanks. This manicure made my heart happy.

  13. Stacy says:

LOL, I think Shatner would *love* wearing a shimmery, spandex shirt!!!

  14. These are PERFECT! I love them! :)

such a original idea. its like the colors are spot on…. well if the show was not so grainy.

  16. Craftynail says:

This is my fave design of your geek manis. It totally looks like their uniforms. I knew it from first glance….. trek!

  17. I love it – so simple yet so completely recognizable! Thanks for sharing! :-)

  18. YEES!!!! I love this manicure! Not to mention the Fried Chicken and Trek re-runs. My Dad and I used to watch this on late night TV while eating dinner (except we used to eat those Hungry Man TV dinners as a treat). I know, I know… not healthy but we loved em. Great job!
